Where is the Recently Deleted folder?

Three levels down, which is why most people never find it: open your profile, tap the menu, then Your activity, and scroll to Recently deleted. Everything you removed within its window is there, newest first, with the remaining days shown against each item.

How do you restore something?

Open the item in the folder, tap the menu, and choose Restore. Instagram asks you to confirm with a security check — a code to your email or phone — which exists to stop someone with a borrowed phone quietly republishing your archive. A restored post returns to its original position in the grid with its original date, likes and comments intact.

Can other people see a post while it sits in the folder?

What happens after 30 days?

Instagram support cannot retrieve a post past its window, and a data download will not contain it either, because the export reflects what exists on your account at the time you request it. This is the argument for keeping your own copies rather than trusting the platform to hold them.

Why do stories get only 24 hours?

Because a story was already temporary. Instagram treats the Recently Deleted window as an extension of the format's own lifespan rather than a second life, so a story you delete has 1 day of grace and then goes. The fix is upstream: turn on automatic story archiving in Settings and activity → Archiving, and every story you post is kept privately after it expires, deleted or not.

What about someone else's deleted posts?

Out of reach. Another account's Recently Deleted folder is private to them, and a deleted post disappears from your view immediately — no viewer, cache trick or third-party site recovers it. The only copy that survives is one somebody saved while the post was live, which is exactly why archiving an account you care about is done in advance, not afterwards.

Why does Instagram keep deleted posts at all?

Two reasons, one for you and one for them. The folder catches mis-taps, which were the single most common complaint behind the feature when it shipped in 2021. It also gives Meta a 30-day window in which content removed for violating the rules can still be reviewed on appeal, which is why items taken down by Instagram itself appear there alongside the ones you deleted.

Does deactivating an account delete the posts?

No. Deactivation hides everything and keeps it, so reactivating restores the profile as it was. Deletion is the other option, and it carries its own 30-day grace period before the account and its content are erased for good.
