Instagram sends no notification when someone blocks you. The reliable test takes 30 seconds: search their handle while logged out. If the profile loads for a stranger but not for you, you are blocked. If it loads for nobody, the account is gone.

Being blocked and being deleted look identical from inside your own app, which is why people spend an evening refreshing a profile that no longer exists. The signals below separate the 2 cases, and the last section covers what a block actually hides.

A blocked account disappears from your search results entirely. Type the exact handle and Instagram returns nothing, or shows the profile with "User not found" where posts should be. The same screen appears for a deleted account, so search alone proves nothing — it only tells you something changed.

How do you check without another account?

Open the profile URL in a private browser window while logged out: instagram.com/theirhandle. A public profile that loads for a logged-out visitor but not for you is a block, full stop. A profile that returns the same empty page in both places was deactivated or deleted by its owner. This test costs nothing and needs no second account, which is why it beats every "block checker" app.

The check only settles the question for public accounts. A private profile shows a locked page to logged-out visitors either way, so you learn nothing from it.

Check a public profile without logging in

Open the handle in the Stalkzi profile viewer — it loads public profiles the way a stranger sees them, with no account and no trace.

What does the old chat look like after a block?

The conversation stays in your inbox and the messages stay readable. What changes is the header: the profile picture goes blank, the name may collapse to "Instagram User", and tapping it leads nowhere. Sending a new message fails silently or returns an error, and adding them to a group chat throws "You cannot add this user".

Can you still follow or tag them?

No. The follow button either does nothing or errors instead of switching to "Requested", and their handle stops autocompleting when you type an @ mention. Old mentions of them in your captions turn into plain grey text rather than links.

What does a mutual friend see?

Everything, unchanged. A block is 1-directional and private: the person who blocked you can still be seen, followed and messaged by everyone else, and Instagram tells nobody that the block exists. If a friend can open the profile and you cannot, you have your answer without asking anyone an awkward question.

What is a soft block, and how is it different?

A soft block is a block followed immediately by an unblock. It removes you from their follower list without leaving the permanent wall in place, so the profile still loads for you — you are simply no longer following it, and you never received a notification about it. If a profile is visible but you have mysteriously stopped following it, that is the pattern.

Why did their story vanish from your tray?

A block removes their stories from your tray immediately, but so do 4 other things: the story expired after 24 hours, they hid their story from you specifically, it went out to close friends only, or their account went private. The full diagnosis is in why you cannot see someone's story, which walks each cause in turn.

What should you not do?

Do not install a "who blocked me" app. None of them have access to block data — Instagram exposes no such endpoint — so they infer it from the same public signals you can read yourself, and they ask for your password to do it. That trade is covered in why no viewer should ever get your password.

How long does a block last, and can you tell when it lifts?

A block lasts until the other person removes it, and Instagram announces neither event. Knowing how to tell if someone blocked you on Instagram is therefore a repeat exercise: the profile that returned nothing yesterday quietly loads again the day they change their mind. The 1 thing that does not come back is the follow. Unblocking restores visibility and drops the relationship to zero, so you will find yourself no longer following an account you followed for 3 years.

The missing follow explains a common confusion. People check a profile, see posts again, and assume nothing ever happened — then notice the Follow button where Following used to sit. A block that lasted 2 hours leaves exactly that trace and nothing else.

What do people get wrong about blocks?

They read silence as hostility. An account that vanishes from search has 4 plausible explanations before malice: the owner deleted it, deactivated it temporarily, changed the handle, or got suspended by Instagram. Handle changes are the quietest of the 4 — the old URL breaks instantly, the person is still there under a new name, and nobody is notified. Search their full name or check a mutual follower's following list before concluding anything.

FAQ

Does Instagram notify you when someone blocks you?

No. There is no notification, no badge and no list.

Can I tell a block from a deleted account?

Yes. Open the profile logged out: a block still loads there, a deleted account does not.

Do old DMs disappear when someone blocks you?

No. The thread stays and stays readable; new messages fail.

Can they see that I tried to visit their profile?

No. Instagram reports no profile visits to anyone.

Does blocking remove their likes and comments?

They stay on your posts but appear from an unclickable account.
