No. A pending message request generates no read receipt at all — you can open it, read it and re-read it, and the sender sees nothing. Receipts start only once you accept the thread.
Instagram message requests are the one genuinely private corner of the inbox, and most people never realise they are standing in it. The tray holds messages from accounts you do not follow, and it behaves by different rules from the inbox 1 tab over.
Do Instagram message requests show as read?
Not while the request is pending. Instagram withholds read receipts on a thread you have not accepted, so a stranger who messages you learns nothing about whether their message was opened, ignored, or read 5 times. On their screen the message simply sits there, delivered.
What changes when you accept?
Acceptance converts the request into an ordinary conversation, and ordinary conversations carry all 3 live signals: receipts, typing indicators and activity status. From that moment the sender sees "Seen" under messages you open, sees typing indicators while you reply, and gets your activity status if you have not turned it off. There is no halfway state: accepting turns all of it on at once.
Replying accepts the thread implicitly. If you type anything, you have accepted, whether or not you tapped the button.
Does declining notify them?
No. Declining removes the request from your tray silently, and the sender is not told. What it does not do is stop them: a declined sender can message again, and the new message lands as a fresh request. Blocking is the tool that actually ends it, and blocking is visible in its own way — your profile stops loading for them, as blocking on Instagram sets out.
How do you read a request without accepting it?
Open the Messages tab, tap Requests at the top, and open the thread. Instagram message requests stay in that tray indefinitely — there is no 30-day expiry, so nothing forces a decision. Reading inside that tray is safe; the 3 actions that leave it are replying, tapping accept, and reacting to a message. Any of those flips the thread into your inbox with receipts enabled.

What is in the "hidden requests" folder?
Messages Instagram filtered as likely spam or offensive, sitting one level below the main request tray. They are not deleted and the sender has no idea their message was filtered. Opening that folder is worth doing occasionally — a genuine message from someone using a new account sometimes lands there by mistake.
Can you turn read receipts off completely?
Yes, for every conversation at once. The toggle lives beside the activity-status control, in Settings and activity → Messages and story replies, and switching it off removes "Seen" from threads you have already accepted. It is a separate switch from activity status, so hiding the green dot alone leaves your receipts running.
Who ends up in the request tray at all?
Anyone who is not a mutual connection: accounts you do not follow, and people whose messages Instagram has not previously seen you accept. Following someone back moves their future messages into the inbox directly. A business or creator account splits things further, sorting the main inbox into Primary and General tabs, but requests stay a separate tray in both cases.
What about disappearing photos sent in a request?
The usual rule applies once the thread is accepted: screenshotting a view-once or vanish-mode photo notifies the sender, while screenshotting ordinary chat content does not. In a pending request, screenshot the preview and no receipt exists to carry the alert — but treat that as a side effect rather than a feature, since accepting is what most people do next.
