Open Settings and activity → Messages and story replies → Show activity status and switch it off. The green dot and your “Active 2h ago” line vanish for everyone — and you stop seeing theirs in return.
Active status is the most under-managed privacy setting on Instagram. The green dot broadcasts your sleep schedule, your working hours, and the fact that you were online for the 20 minutes after their message arrived and said nothing.
Who can see when I was last active on Instagram?
Two groups see your activity status: accounts you follow, and anyone you have exchanged a direct message with. They see it in the DM inbox and inside the chat thread, either as a green dot for “online now” or as a timestamp such as “Active 3h ago”.
Random strangers scrolling your profile do not see it. The people most likely to be watching — someone you message often, someone you just started following — do.
How do I turn off active status?
Turning off active status takes 5 taps and about 15 seconds on any device. On iPhone and Android:
- Open your profile and tap the three-line menu, top right.
- Tap Settings and activity.
- Tap Messages and story replies.
- Tap Show activity status.
- Switch the toggle off.
On desktop at instagram.com: More in the bottom-left, then Settings, then Messages and story replies under “How others can interact with you”, then the same toggle. The change syncs across your devices right away — no need to repeat it per phone.
What do I lose by turning it off?
Reciprocity is the price: once active status is hidden, you can no longer see anyone else's green dot or last-active time either. Instagram enforces this both ways, on purpose, so nobody can hide while watching.
What you keep: DMs, notifications, story replies and everything else work exactly as before. Turning off activity status does not restrict anyone, does not unfollow anyone, and is not announced.
Does this also turn off read receipts?
No. Read receipts — the “Seen” label under a message you opened — are a separate control, and hiding your activity status leaves them switched on. Instagram splits them into their own toggle in the same Messages menu, so turn that one off too if you want the full silence.
Also separate: your profile visits (never shown to anyone) and your story views (always named). One toggle does not cover all three.
Can I hide my active status from one person only?
No. Active status is all-or-nothing across your whole audience — as of September 2026 Instagram offers no per-person exception and no scheduled or temporary mode. The closest workarounds are per-account tools with heavier side effects: Restrict hides your status from that account and quietly filters their comments, while blocking cuts them off entirely.
If the goal is distance from one person without drama, muting is the softer move — though muting does not touch your green dot.
Does hiding active status hide my story views?
No. These are unrelated systems. With activity status off, opening someone's story still puts your username on their seen-by list, and the only way around that is watching without a logged-in account.
Green dot off, story views still visible?
Watch public stories through the Stalkzi story viewer — no login, so nothing to record.
While you are in the settings menu, the privacy checklist covers the other five toggles worth changing in the same sitting.
Does Threads use the same setting?
Check it separately. Threads runs on your Instagram account but keeps its own activity and privacy controls, so switching the dot off in Instagram does not guarantee it is off in Threads. Open the Threads app, go to its settings, and confirm — that is 1 extra minute and it closes the most common leak people miss after doing everything right on Instagram.
