You cannot know for certain. Instagram shows a muted account no notification, no list and no indicator, and it never has. What you can do is read 3 soft signals and run 1 test that separates a mute from an unfollow.

Muting is the polite exit: the other person keeps following you, keeps the relationship intact on paper, and stops seeing your posts and stories. It was built to be invisible, and it is.

How can you tell if someone muted you on Instagram?

By absence, never by evidence. The pattern worth noticing is a follower who used to appear in your story viewers every day and now never does, while still following you and still replying to messages. 1 quiet week means nothing. 3 weeks of total silence from someone who was previously reliable is the signal.

What is the close-friends test?

Post a story to your close friends list with that person on it, and watch whether they view it. A muted main story and a viewed close-friends story is a strong tell, because the mute applies to your regular story ring while close-friends stories surface separately. It is the closest thing to a controlled experiment the app allows, and it costs you nothing but 1 story.

Keep the story ordinary. A close-friends post that reads like a trap tells the other person exactly what you are doing, and how the close friends list works explains what else that green ring changes.

Is it a mute, an unfollow or a block?

They still follow youYesNoNo
Their profile loads for youYesYesNo
They appear in your followers listYesNoNo
You can message themYesYesNo

Start with the followers list, because it settles the cheapest question first. If they are gone from it, this was never a mute. If a profile will not load at all, work through the signs of an Instagram block instead.

What innocent explanations come first?

Most of them. Instagram shows the story tray in an engagement-weighted order, so a person who stopped interacting with you drifts to the end of the tray and never reaches your ring. Others simply stopped opening stories, muted notifications globally, or are on holiday. A drop in viewers across your whole audience is an algorithm story, not a personal one — see why story views drop.

Do the apps that claim to show mutes work?

No. Mute state lives on Instagram's side and is exposed through no public surface, so an app cannot read it — it can only compare your viewer lists over time and guess, which you can do by eye. The ones asking for your login to run that guess are the exact trade described in why no viewer should ever get your password.

How do you mute someone yourself?

Hold their story ring and tap Mute, or open their profile, tap Following and choose Mute to pick posts, stories or both. They are told nothing, exactly as you are told nothing. Muting without unfollowing covers where each toggle lands.

What does muting actually hide?

Whatever the muter selected, and nothing more. Instagram splits the control into posts and stories, so 1 person may mute your stories while still seeing every feed post, and another may do the reverse. Working out how to tell if someone muted you on Instagram gets harder because of that split: a follower absent from your story viewers may be liking your posts the same week.

Direct messages are never affected. A muted account still receives your messages in the ordinary inbox, still gets notifications for them, and still sees your replies to their stories. Muting is a feed decision, not a relationship one, which is exactly why so many people use it instead of unfollowing.

What about notes, lives and close friends?

Muting stories also silences live notifications from that account, so a muted person will not be pulled into your broadcast. Notes behave differently again: they sit at the top of the inbox and follow their own rules, covered in who can see your Instagram notes. Close friends stories bypass a story mute in practice, which is what makes the test in the previous section work at all.

FAQ

Does Instagram notify you when someone mutes you?

No. There is no notification and no indicator.

Can a muted person still see my posts?

Yes, by opening your profile directly. Mute only removes you from their feed and tray.

Does muting remove a follower?

No. A muted account still follows you and still counts.

Does the close-friends test prove a mute?

It strongly suggests one, but it is not proof.

Can I see a list of everyone who muted me?

No. Instagram publishes no such list to anyone.
