It comes down to one switch. If your account is public, non-followers can see almost everything — posts, reels, stories, highlights, your bio and profile picture. If it's private, non-followers see only your username, profile picture, bio, and follower counts; everything else is locked.

People worry about who can see what, but Instagram keeps it simpler than it feels. Here's the full breakdown for both settings.

If your account is public

Non-followers — including people with no account at all — can see:

  • All posts, carousels, and reels
  • Your active stories and highlights
  • Your full-size profile picture, bio, and tagged photos
  • Follower and following counts

And because it's public, any of it can be viewed through an anonymous viewer without you knowing. That's simply what "public" means. Full detail in public vs private.

If your account is private

Non-followers see only the "front door":

  • Username and profile picture
  • Bio
  • Follower / following / post counts (the numbers, not the content)

Posts, stories, reels, and highlights are all hidden until you approve them as a follower. Anonymous viewers can't reach private content either — that's the whole point of the setting.

Visible no matter what

A few things show regardless: your username, your profile photo (yes, even on private — though it appears small), and your name. If even that bothers you, the only fix is changing them, not a privacy toggle.

Taking control

Switch to private in Settings → Account privacy. Remember it's all-or-nothing per account — for a middle ground, Close Friends lets you share select stories privately while staying public overall.
