Mostly no. The popular belief that whoever's at the top of your story viewers "likes you the most" or "stalks you" is a myth. For stories under ~50 views, Instagram shows them in reverse-chronological order (most recent viewer first). Only once you pass that threshold does an engagement-based algorithm kick in — and even then it's not a crush-o-meter.
This question drives a lot of overthinking. Here's what the order actually reflects.
Under ~50 viewers: just recency
For a story with a small number of views, the list is simply reverse-chronological: the person who watched most recently appears on top. It has nothing to do with feelings, stalking, or interest — just timing.
Over ~50 viewers: engagement-weighted
Once a story crosses roughly 50 views, Instagram reorders the list using an algorithm that factors in how much you interact with each account — profile visits, likes, DMs, searches. So accounts you engage with a lot may rise. But this reflects your activity patterns and Instagram's guesses, not a ranking of who secretly adores you.
The stalking myth
"They're always first, so they must be obsessed" doesn't hold. Someone can top your list because they happened to watch last, or because you visit their profile often. The order is not evidence of anyone's intentions. Don't read a soap opera into a sort order.
What the list can't show
