No. Instagram reports how many times a post was shared and never who shared it. A public reshare to a story reaches you through notifications, but the share counter itself rolls story reshares and private DM sends into 1 anonymous number.
The gap between "347 shares" and "which 347 people" is deliberate. Sharing a post in a private message is a private act, and exposing the sender would make the send button a very different feature.
Where do you see the share count?
On a creator or business account, open the post and tap View insights. Shares sit beside likes, comments and saves. A personal account sees likes and comments only, so the first step for anyone who cares about the number is switching account type — which takes 30 seconds and is reversible.
Why does Instagram never show the names?
Because most shares happen in direct messages. Publishing a list would turn every private send into a public record, and it would expose the recipient as much as the sender. Instagram draws the line at aggregate counts for exactly that reason, and no creator tier, subscription or partner tool lifts it.
Which reshares do you actually see?
The public ones. If someone adds your post to their story and their account is public — or private but followed by you — the reshare lands in your activity feed, and you can tap through to their story. Tagged mentions surface the same way. Everything else stays dark: DM sends, copied links, screenshots and anything reposted outside Instagram.

What exactly counts as a share?
| Action | Counts as a share | You see who |
|---|---|---|
| Sent in a DM | Yes | No |
| Added to their story | Yes | Yes, if public or followed |
| Link copied | Yes | No |
| Screenshot | No | No |
| Saved to a collection | No, counted as a save | No |
Are saves treated the same way?
Saves get their own number and the same anonymity. You learn that 120 accounts bookmarked a post and never which ones, and the saver is told nothing either — a point covered in whether people see you saving their post. For the algorithm, saves and sends now matter more than likes, which is why both sit in insights at all.
Can you stop people resharing your posts?
Partly. In Settings and activity → Sharing and remixes you can switch off story resharing of your feed posts, and turn off remixes for reels. Neither blocks a screenshot, and a public account is public: anything visible can be captured. What anyone can see on a public account sets the realistic boundary.
How do you find public reshares after the fact?
Three places, none of them complete. The activity feed holds reshare notifications for a limited window, the Tagged tab collects posts that tagged you, and Instagram search finds your handle inside captions. Anyone asking "can you see who shared your Instagram post" is usually hoping for a 4th place that does not exist: a named list. No such place exists, on any account tier, at any follower count.
Story reshares are the most perishable of the 3. The reshare lives 24 hours, and the notification about it is easy to scroll past, so a post that travelled widely on Monday leaves almost no trace by Wednesday. Creators who care about this check daily rather than weekly.
Does a reshare credit you automatically?
For story reshares of feed posts, yes — your handle rides along on the sticker and is tappable. For screenshots, no. A screenshot reposted as someone else's content carries nothing back to you, which is how images circulate for years with the original account forgotten. Adding a visible mark to your own work is the only durable answer, and it costs nothing to place a handle in a corner before posting.
